Aurora Borealis Seen In Chicago

Northern Lights Visible Across Illinois Amid Rare Geomagnetic Storm

An unusually strong solar storm is giving most of the country a chance to see Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis.

Chicago got a rare taste of the North Pole this weekend as a solar storm brought the Northern Lights, also known as aurora borealis, to places where they are rarely seen. A historic light show was visible in the Chicago area Friday night as a geomagnetic storm made the aurora visible across Illinois.

Known as the Aurora Borealis, the violent clash creates vivid moving ribbons of light across the sky. Although Illinois doesn't quite appear in the agency's Aurora viewline map, it's possible that some may be visible in the northern part of the state.
